Farm Laws: Issue 8 - The making of the three Farm Legislations

The Union Government in the last few days of 2020 Monsoon Session of the Parliament unilaterally pushed the passage of the three Farm Bills (now Acts) in a manner that falls short of democratic procedure. Whether the APMC governed agriculture markets has been uprooted or the MSP has been dismantled remains a contentious issues – for neither of any of the Farm Laws has explicitly done so. For this reason perhaps, the Farm Laws are opposed for their procedural infringement even more than the content of the laws themselves. By passing the Bills without allowing a close scrutiny of the Upper House of the Parliament (‘Council of States’ or ‘Rajya Sabha’) and without having a constructive consultation with the beneficiaries of the laws, the three Farm legislations have been alleged to be violating the basic principles of federalism and subversion of democratic principles
